These are the papers of Andrew Jackson Donelson (1799-1871), soldier, presidential secretary, diplomat, editor, vice-presidential candidate, lawyer, and planter of Nashville. The collection includes correspondence, journals, diplomatic papers, news clippings, scrapbook, sketches, photographs, and other papers covering Donelson's career as Andrew Jackson's aide-de-camp and private secretary; charge d'affaires to Texas, 1844-45; U.S. minister to Prussian and Germany, 1846-49; editor of the Washington Union, 1851-52; and vice-presidential candidate, 1856. Also included are some papers of his wife Emily Donelson (1807-1836), his daughter Mary Emily Donelson (1829-1905), and later descendants. Principal correspondents include William G. The journals and ledgers of Miller's general store and post office in Yellow Store, Hawkins County, contain itemized daily transactions giving names of purchasers, items purchased, and prices charged. The ledgers, 1851-68, consist of individual customer accounts, listing names and prices of items purchased. A partial index for the ledgers is included.

This collection consists of a series of historical sketches of Hawkins County, most of which were written by James Woods Rogan (1823-1891) of Rogersville, and originally published in 1859. These sketches include a biographical sketch of Rogan and a name index. The collection also includes genealogical data on the Dudly, Gerrish, Winthrop, and related families; a guest register of the Galbraith Springs Hotel, 1900; a brief history of Bulls Gap, 1862; and other items relating to the history of Hawkins County.

The diary of Archelaus Madison Hughes (b. 1834), Weakley County school superintendent and farmer, is a record of Hughes' tenure as school superintendent, 1867-ca. 1869. Hughes comments on various educational concerns such as the lack of funds, teaching freed Negroes, and the free school system. Beginning in 1875 the entries consist of Hughes' comments on international, national, state, and local politics; and assorted remarks and observations on religion.

This M.A. thesis, Jacksonville State University, 1971, deals with the life and career of John Bell Hamilton (1807-1887), a Maury County farmer, Methodist circuit rider, and Confederate army officer; and Thomas Hamilton Williams (1843-1922), who was reared as an adopted son by the Hamiltons and served as an enlisted cavalryman in the Confederate army.

John Bell (1797-1869) was a prominent Nashville lawyer; Congressman; U.S. Senator; Secretary of War; Unionist; and later supporter of Tennessee 's secession. The collection includes his speeches and Congressional reports, which cover topics such as patronage in Tennessee, national politics, and the presidential election of 1860, in which Bell ran as the Constitutional Union Party candidate. Correspondents include Neill S. Brown, William G. Brownlow, Bailie Peyton, and several other prominent individuals of the period.

The scrapbook consists primarily of correspondence, songs, speeches, and verses composed by O. J. Nelson (b. 1847), supervisor for the town of Morris, in Grundy County, Illinois. Also included is a copy of a portion of the 1864 Civil War diary of John Vangant of Shelldahl, Iowa, an enlisted man in the U.S. Army. Vangant, who was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, describes camp activities, training exercises, Confederate skirmishes in the area, and foraging expeditions.

This is a collection of journals of various members of the Ross family. Volumes 1 and 2 consist mainly of the daily journal and lecture notes kept by Charles Barker Ross (fl. 1855) while at Bethany College, Brooke County, Virginia (now West Virginia ),1851-53. Later entries in Volume 1 consist of household accounts, 1870-71, kept by Edward Barker and Dorothy Crouch Ross. Volume 2 also contains tuition records paid to James Ross'school in Montgomery County, Tennessee, 1859-61. Volume 3 consists of the journals, 1854-62, of Capt. Reuben Reddick Ross (1830-1864), Confederate States of America. Ross details the fighting at Fort Donelson in 1862 where he was captured by Federal troops. Also included in Volume 3 is some genealogical data on the Campbell family.

Papers of the Barton and Taylor families of Cannon and Rutherford counties were collected by Mrs. W. H. Westbrooks. The collection consists of accounts, church records, correspondence, court records, estate papers, genealogical data, land records, legal documents, military records, clippings and photographs, receipts, school records, and slave records. Some of the subjects discussed in the correspondence for the period 1833-1902 include farm prices, weather, typhoid and yellow fever epidemics, the Mexican and Civil Wars, Indian attacks, politics, and religion. Also included is some genealogical data on the Becton, Jones, and allied families in Arkansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

These Bible records, which are arranged alphabetically by family, give birth and death dates of immediate members of families. Additional information such as marriage dates, dates of important family events, and birth and death dates of slaves may also be included. The information listed usually covers one to three generations but may extend to five or six generations. These records consist primarily of information on Tennessee families; records from neighboring states such as North Carolina, Kentucky and Arkansas are also included.

This collection consists of questionnaires, which were sent to all known living Civil War veterans in Tennessee in 1914-15 and 1920, and returned by 1922. There were 1,650 respondents—Union and Confederate—and the questionnaires they returned contain information regarding date and place of birth; date and place of enlistment; company and regiment; war service, including descriptions of battles and prison life; economic and social status of the soldier and his family; genealogical, educational and religious data; and occupation before and after the war. Several questionnaires contain additional descriptive material. An invaluable resource for the social history of Tennessee's Civil War soldiers, the abstracted questionnaires is also available in a five volume published edition. Index and register available.

Clark in the course of their research for Frank Owsley’s studies of antebellum Southern yeomanry. Data regarding livestock, land improvements, products, statistics by race, population for county seats, literacy, schools, and number of teachers for sample counties in Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi are shown. Information was taken from Schedules I, II, and IV (the population, slave, and agricultural schedules)of the unpublished federal census of 1850 and 1860 and tabulated ledger-style for individual farmers. Miss Griffis describes social and religious activities and contrasts life in the North and the South.
