TSLA Summer Teacher Institute

"The Forgotten Conflict: Teaching the War of 1812 in Tennessee"

Please join the Tennessee State Library & Archives for a teacher institute on the War of 1812. Over the course of two days, participants will work with original primary sources available at the Tennessee State Library & Archives related to the War of 1812, participate in living history activities, tour the grounds of the Tennessee State Capitol, explore the creation of the Star-Spangled Banner, and more that will help them teach the War of 1812 in their classrooms. Participants will receive a $50 payment for mileage and parking expenses, lodging, breakfast and lunch each day.

When? Wednesday, June 11 & Thursday, June 12, 2014. 

Who? Tennessee State Library & Archives

Where? TSLA Auditorium, Nashville. (Moderate walking in downtown Nashville is involved.)

"The Forgotten Conflict: Teaching the War of 1812 in Tennessee" (NEW!)

Response to our summer teacher institute was so overhwhelmingly positive that we decided to add a one-day version of this workshop for licensed classroom teachers in East and West Tennessee. Participants will work with original primary sources available at TSLA related to teh War of 1812 and explore teaching strategies that will help you teach the war of 1812 in your classrooms. Participants receive lunch and $50 for parking and mileage.

When & Where?

East Tennessee: June 18th in Vonore at the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum, 8 a.m.- 3:30 p.m.

West Tennessee: June 26th in Jackson at the Jackson-Madison County Library, 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Workshop is full, please email us to be placed on the waitlist.)

"Digital History at the Tennessee State Library and Archives"

Please join the Tennessee State Library & Archives for a session exploring the various primary sources available at the TSLA website including the Tennessee Virtual Archive, the Civil War GIS Project, the Civil War Sourcebook, historic newspapers, online exhibits, and more! Special focus will be given to how teachers may find primary sources that link specifically to the new social studies curriculum standards.
