Commission Oversees Work of Agency

The Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth meets four times a year to oversee the efforts of the agency. Meetings are open to the public, and an agenda for the meeting is available in pdf format. Minutes from the most recent meeting are also available.


Appointed by the governor for overlapping three-year terms, the 21 Commission members serve as the policy board for the agency.


Commission Members. At least one Commission member (list) represents each development district, and the commissioners of state departments serving children, or their designees, are ex officio members. The Commission also has youth advisory members as necessary to meet the requirements for serving as the state advisory group under the federal Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act.

Committees. The Commission has four standing committees to oversee the operations of the agency.

 

  • The Commission officers and committee chairs served as the Executive Committee. The chair is appointed by the governor to a three-year term. Other officers, the vice-chair and the secretary, are elected by the Commission. Committee chairs and members are appointed by the Commission chair.   • The Budget and Data Committee is responsible for fiscal matters, such as Commission budget requests, budget analysis, and budget recommendations, and for agency efforts to collect and disseminate information, including The Advocate, KIDS COUNT, and other publications.   • The Councils Committee reviews activities related to the nine regional councils on children and youth and interdepartmental activities.The agenda for the upcoming meeting is available in pdf format. Minutes from the most recent meeting are also available.

  • The Children’s Services Committee provides oversight for the Ombudsman Program, the Council on Children's Mental Health, the Second Look Commission and the Youth Transitions Advisory Council.   • The Juvenile Justice and Minority Issues Committee supervises the implementation of the federal Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act in Tennessee, the administration of state funds for juvenile justice, and other juvenile justice activities.   • The Legislative Committee meets annually to recommend legislative positions to the full Commission. The agenda for the upcoming meeting is available in pdf format. Minutes are also available.
