October 2011 Collections

TENNESSEE DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE PROVIDES ANALYSIS
OF OCTOBER 2011 COLLECTIONS

NASHVILLE – October 2011 collections of the Tennessee Department of Revenue were $791,484,636, an increase of $58,669,234, or 8.0 percent from October 2010 collections. 

Sales and use tax collections totaled $570,026,876, an increase of $33,103,488 or 6.2 percent from October 2010 collections.  

Collections from the retail trade group increased 4.8 percent.  Items with significant changes include:

  • Motor vehicle dealers and service stations: up 7.3 percent (with a 10.0 percent increase in the new, used motor vehicle sub-category item)
  • Eating & drinking places: up 6.5 percent
  • Miscellaneous retail stores: up 5.2 percent
  • General merchandise stores: up 3.7 percent
  • Building materials stores: up 5.7 percent
  • Apparel & accessory stores: up 9.1 percent

Collections from the service group increased 10.8 percent from October 2010. The major contributors to this gain were hotel and lodging places (16.6 percent), health services (579.7 percent), automotive repair, service & parking (10.6 percent) and amusement & recreational services (25.5 percent).  Somewhat offsetting the gain was other services (16.3 percent).

Collections from the non-retail, non-services group increased 4.3 percent led by a gain in wholesale trade (14.7 percent).

Consumer use tax collections were $1,182,712, an increase of $956,105 or 421.9 percent from October 2010.

Disaster relief tax rebate was $10,802 in October 2011 for taxpayers affected by the May 2010 flood, April 2011 disaster relief, and the sales tax rebate on storm shelters.

Franchise and excise tax collections were $35,089,907, an increase of $25,721,225 or 274.5 percent compared to the collection in October 2010.  Separately, franchise tax collections were $12,798,275, an increase of $30,583,979 or 172.0 percent from last October.  Excise tax collections were $22,291,632, a decrease of $4,862,754 or 17.9 percent from October 2010.

TVA – In Lieu of tax collections were $28,661,892, an increase of $2,566,579 or 9.8 percent compared to October 2010.

Business taxcollections were $3,234,832, an increase of $917,574 or 39.6 percent compared to October 2010.

Motor vehicle fuel taxcollections were $15,915,125, an increase of $890,604 or 5.9 percent compared to October 2010.

Privilege tax collections were $20,548,542, an increase of $808,500 or 4.1 percent compared to October 2010.

Inheritance, gift & estate taxcollections were $6,573,550, a decrease of $5,524,091 or 45.7 percent compared to October 2010.

Tobacco tax collections were $23,575,940, a decrease of $1,706,602 or 6.8 percent compared to October 2010.

The Department of Revenue is responsible for the administration of state tax laws and motor vehicle title and registration laws established by the legislature and the collection of taxes and fees associated with those laws. The Department of Revenue collects approximately 88 percent of total state tax revenue. During the 2011 fiscal year, the department collected $10.4 billion in state taxes and fees. In addition to collecting state taxes, the Department of Revenue collects taxes for local, county and municipal governments. During the2011 fiscal year, local government collections by the Department of Revenue exceeded $2.0 billion. In collecting taxes, the department enforces the revenue laws fairly and impartially in an effort to encourage voluntary taxpayer compliance.
