Direct Deposit and T.A.P. (Tennessee Automated Payment)

Claimants filing a new claim over the phone are automatically set up on a debit card, unless they have filed previously and opted for direct deposit at that time.  ***Please note: If your banking account information has changed since the last time it was entered you will need to update it by going to, clicking on the View/Update Payment Type and following the step by step prompts.***  Claimants wishing to choose direct deposit would need to do so online using the same method described above. Entering and maintaining the correct banking information is solely the responsibility of the claimant as Department of Labor employees are not allowed access to enter a claimant’s banking information.

Your debit card will arrive in the mail within 7 to 10 business days in an envelope with a return address of State of Tennessee, P.O. Box 9044, Copell, TX 75019. Please open immediately and follow the activation instructions inside. You will need to contact Chase at 1-866-429-9835 to activate your card and you will also be prompted to set up a four digit PIN number. Do not share your PIN number or TAP card with anyone. If you forget or have problems with your PIN, please contact Chase Customer Service immediately. After three incorrect attempts, you will suspend access to your card until after midnight. If you lose your card or do not receive your card within 7 to 10 business days, please contact Chase Customer Service and request a replacement card to be sent to you, this will be at no cost to you.

If your claim is approved, your benefits will be deposited within 48 hours of the first payable week approved by the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Please remember to continue to certify for benefits weekly; failure to do so will result in benefits not being added to your card.

You can use your debit card anywhere that accepts the Visa card, however, when making purchases, please remember to use it as a credit card.  You may not use your card for PAY AT THE PUMP.

If you wish to check your balance you may contact Chase up to four times a month, after that it will charge a fee of $.25 a call. You may access your account information for free at Please make sure funds are available before trying to use your card so no fees are incurred

If you need to change your address, you must come to your local unemployment office or go to to do so. Some ATM owners and operators may charge an additional fee per transaction, called a surcharge.  There are no surcharges at Chase or MoneyPass ATMs.

* Please avoid using any ATMs that do not show the Chase or Money Pass logo, you may have additional surcharges from those ATMs. All Chase and Money Pass ATMs do not incur a surcharge. Fees may incur regardless if a balance is available on the card or not, and will be paid out of the first deposit made on the card if your claim is approved.
