TDEC is responsible for managing, protecting and enhancing the quality of the state's water resources through voluntary, regulatory and educational programs.
Ensuring a safe water supply is essential for daily living. TDEC oversees the design, construction and operation of public works systems, certifies laboratories and water suppliers that conduct drinking water testing and conduct training and certify water supply system operators.
TDEC provides the technical basis for setting the state's water quality standards, developing the rules and guidance for implementing these standards and conducting permitting, compliance and enforcement programs to establish standards throughout the state. We also implement a comprehensive statewide watershed management program designed to identify and restore impaired water bodies.
A septic system is a type of small-scale sewage treatment system common in areas with no connection to main sewage pipes provided by local governments or other entities.
