  Natural Areas Week is April 9-15

  Calendar of Events for 2012

The Tennessee Natural Areas Act was passed 41 years ago, in May 1971, when the General Assembly passed and Governor Winfield Dunn signed the Tennessee Natural Areas Preservation Act. Tennessee now has 82 designated state natural areas totaling more than 120,000 acres where rare, endangered or unique plant and animal species are protected for future generations.

There are more than 50 events scheduled to celebrate Tennessee State Natural Areas Week from April 9 through April 15. Check the list below to find a Natural Areas Week event for your schedule. View PDF.

Collins Gulf Wildflower Pilgrimage
Location: Meet at the Collins West Trailhead at the Savage Gulf State Natural Area

Savage Falls Hike, South Cumberland State Park

Description: Join Ranger George and begin this year’s Natural Areas Week with a moderate four mile hike roundtrip to view beautiful Savage Falls. Wear good shoes or boots. Bring a snack and water. Bring a raincoat or poncho if raining. Bug repellent for those pesky ticks. Don’t forget your camera.

Colditz Cove State Natural Area Week Hike
Location: Colditz Cove State Natural Area
Date: Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Description:  This is a short but rocky hike approximately 1 mile in length. Colditz Cove is a hidden gem with an old growth hemlock forest with some trees reaching 4 feet in diameter. This area was saved from logging but is now threatened by the invasive Hemlock Wooly Adelgid. Learn more about the history of the area and the current conservation efforts to save the unique environment created by these large trees. Wear appropriate footwear, the trail is both wet and rocky.

Spring Wildflower Walk up Soak Creek in Piney Falls State Natural Area
Location: Soak Creek Access, Piney Falls State Natural Area

Description:  This is an easy (flat) but rocky walk up the Soak Creek Road in the gorge of Piney Falls State Natural Area. This walk almost always provides a wide array of abundant spring wildflowers for viewing including trout lilies, louse wort, violets, spring beauties, hepatica, trilliums and others. Wear sturdy footwear, layered clothing. Bring your water and lunch.  We will not go if the weather is scheduled for heavy rain, so leave a call-back number in your E-mail RSVP where you can be contacted. This hike is relatively easy and about 2 miles round trip.

Laurel Snow State Natural Area - Hike to Laurel Falls
Location: Meet at the Laurel Snow State Natural Area Trailhead off Back Valley Road in Dayton

Description: Participants will hike a moderate to difficult 5 mile round trip to the base of Laurel Falls, plunging 80'. Along the way, hikers will observe relics and ruins from the Dayton Coal and Iron complex, and hear stories of its development as a Pocket Wilderness Area and National Recreation Trail. Just beyond Laurel Falls, hikers will be treated to outstanding views of Dayton and the East Tennessee Valley from Bryan Overlook. Anticipate 4-5 hours for round trip. Hiking boots recommended.

Colditz Cove State Natural Area Scenic Hike

Description: We will meet at the parking lot for the Colditz Cove SNA on Northrup Falls Road. Please join us to celebrate spring in this beautiful natural area! We will admire the variety of plateau wildflowers, the old growth Eastern Hemlock & Eastern White Pine trees, as well as the ever-scenic Northrup Falls. The hike is easy to moderate and will require a small amount of negotiation through rocks and boulders. Bring your lunch and will enjoy a break under the falls. The hike should last 1-2 hours.

Pogue Creek SNA Wildflower Hike – 2 Hikes!
Location: Pogue Creek State Natural Area, leaving from Pickett State Park and Alvin C. York State Park

Description: Park Staff and Friends of PSP members will be leading two hikes into Pogue Creek State Natural Area. This area is undeveloped and all hikes will take place in an off-trail setting. This may require more sturdy footwear/durable clothing than the average trail hiker is used to. The first will be an all day hike that will appeal to the more adventurous crowd. This trip will begin at the Pickett State Office at 9 a.m. CT, where we will carpool to the entry point. Please bring your lunch and pack large enough to bring extra water, raingear, field books, etc. Expected return time is approximately 4-5 pm, where we should meet up with those on the second hike. We will have vehicles available to shuttle the group back to the park office.
The second hike will begin at 3 p.m. CT. We will meet at the Alvin C York Park in the Grist Mill Parking Lot. A much easier hike than the first one offered, this hike will follow an old logging road for much of its duration past some of the best wildflowers in the region. Trilliums, trout lilies, lady slippers, hepatica, spring beauties are but a few of the wildflowers that will be in bloom. Both groups should meet up around 5 p.m. CT.

North Chickamauga Creek Gorge State Natural Area - Overlook Hike

Description: Participants will hike a moderate to difficult 5 mile round trip hike to reach one of North Chickamauga Creek's scenic vistas, overlooking North Chick at its confluence with Boston Branch and Rogers Creek. Along the way, we will pass remnants of the Montlake Coal mining operation, follow the base of towering bluffs, and admire many spring wildflowers in all their glory. Anticipate 4-5 hours for round trip. Hiking boots recommended.

Spring Walk to the Massengale Homeplace

Description: We’ll meet at the Historic Rugby Visitor’s Center for a short orientation. The hike will be of easy to moderate difficulty round trip to the historic Massengale Homeplace and back. The program should be no longer than 2 hours. We should be able to see spring wildflowers and we’ll discuss the history of the Rugby colony and early settlers and the state natural area.

Good Native Alternatives to Common Invasive Exotic Plants

Description: This is an indoor program to be held in the Johnson Auditorium at the Historic Rugby Visitor’s Center. Come learn about the impact of invasive exotic plants that are sold in nurseries and used by gardeners across America AND IN HISTORIC RUGBY and why it’s important to get rid of them in the landscape. Also, find out why planting natives is important and get information regarding which native plants are good for your area and where you can buy them. This program is about 45 minutes long and full of beautiful pictures. There will be time for questions and there will be handouts and free posters available.

Hike the Overmountain Victory Trail through Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area

Reservations: Not necessary. Meet at Trailhead off Hampton Creek Road at 9 a.m. ET. Hike canceled in case of rain.
Description: This is a moderately challenging hike up the Overmountain Victory Trail in the Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area, retracing the route of the Revolutionary patriot militia, the "Overmountain Men" as they headed to the battle at Kings' Mountain in 1780. We will hike approximately 8 miles round trip, stopping for lunch (and gorgeous views) after about 4 miles and 2000 feet of elevation gain at the Overmountain Shelter in Yellow Mountain Gap on the AT, and then return the way we came. Enjoy the diverse habitats, a piece of history, lovely views, and maybe even the song of the Golden-winged Warbler that this special area has to offer! Wear sturdy footwear and layered clothing. Bring raingear, water, and lunch. We will not go in case of rain or bad weather.

Fiery Gizzard Trash Pickup

Description: With heavy spring rains come heavy trash deposits along the banks of the Big Fiery Gizzard creek. Help your friendly Park Ranger pick up trash while scoring brownie points with Mother Nature!  Trash bags provided.

Buggytop/Lost Cove Cave Hike at Carter State Natural Area
Location: Meet at the Carter State Natural Area trailhead (TN Hwy 56, 7.3 mi. south of Sewanee)

Description: Moderate, 4.5 miles with 640-foot elevation change. Pack water and a snack to hike down to the impressive main entrance to Lost Cove Cave, then up to a higher, dryer entrance that was inhabited by Woodland Indians, and back. Bring your camera - expect to see a variety of spring wildflowers. At this time the cave is closed as part of an effort to slow the spread of white-nose syndrome, a disease that is lethal to bats.

Description: Participants will hike the moderate 1 mile Short Loop as the sun sets and learn about the Natural Area’s history and hopefully see some wildlife such as owls, bats, raccoons and other nocturnal animals. This will be a 1 hour hike. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a flashlight.

Description: Join birders as they search for warblers and other spring migrants. Bring binoculars and meet in the visitor center's parking lot.

Dunbar Cave State Natural Area – Bird Hike

Dunbar Cave State Natural Area – Wildflower Hike

Description: A slow hike around Radnor Lake with members of NTOS looking for spring migrants. Radnor is nationally famous as a birding hot spot, especially for wood warblers in the spring and fall. With the early migrants in their spring finery and in full song, and with few leaves on trees, this is a good opportunity to actually see some beautiful small birds. Bring binoculars, as they are a must for full enjoyment of birding. Leaders will have one or two extra pairs available on a first-come, first-served basis. This is a short half-day or less outing. We will go in light rain, so dress accordingly, but heavy rain will cancel the walk.

Description: Stillhouse Hollow Falls State Natural Area is a 90-acre state natural area in Maury County. The natural area is named for its most significant feature, Stillhouse Hollow Falls, which can be seen by walking approximately 2/3 of a mile along the Stillhouse Hollow Falls trail. The trail crosses an unnamed tributary that forms small scenic cascades before plunging approximately 75 feet over the falls. A deep hollow is formed below the falls that is surrounded by steep slopes where wet-weather springs emerge. These conditions have made a good portion of the trail ideal for spring wildflowers. We will identify wildflowers as we walk to and from the falls. The distance of the hike is approximately1.6 miles. Please bring water for the event.
Consult the weather forecast; the hike will be cancelled in case of bad weather. The trip leader will call/write everyone if there is a cancellation.

Description: Help celebrate Natural Areas Week with botanists from Tennessee’s Natural Heritage Program for a remarkable wildflower hike at Taylor Hollow, a state natural area owned by the Tennessee Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. Located on the Eastern Highland Rim, Taylor Hollow is renowned for its spring flora, especially the display of blue-eyed Mary, a state-endangered plant. This is an easy to moderately difficult hike lasting two to three hours. Participants should bring water, snacks, sturdy footwear, and dress appropriately for the weather. As the wildflower display is sure to be showy, don’t forget your camera.

A variety of bird life such as songbirds, ducks, herons, owls, or an eagle are likely to be seen. Cost is $20.00 per boat if park canoe is used. Private canoes are no charge. Description: In conjunction with State Natural Areas Week and Tennessee State Park 75th Anniversary, a guided hike at Devil’s Backbone SNA. Meet up with Park Rangers and their guests to explore an area off the Natchez Trace Parkway. Devils Backbone is managed by Tennessee State Natural Areas and Tennessee State Parks, this area will offer a unique view of several different ecological communities all in one hike. This trail is considered to be moderate with 200 feet in elevation change and 3 miles in length. Be sure to bring water, and a snack.

Deep Swamp Canoe Trips at Reelfoot Lake - 2 Trips!

Description: Join our experienced naturalists for a half-day canoe float through seldom explored areas of Reelfoot Lake. Observe old growth cypress forest, a heron rookery and an Eagle nest as we leisurely paddle through the cypress swamp. Large fish swimming, ducks taking flight, and an occasional snake making an appearance add excitement to the trip. A variety of bird life such as songbirds, ducks, herons, owls, or an eagle are likely to be seen. Cost is $20.00 per boat if park canoe is used. Private canoes are no charge. We suggest you bring snacks, drinks, a change of clothes, camera and binoculars in a waterproof, floatable container. Trip is approximately 3 hours and begins at 1 p.m. CT. This is one of the most unique adventures offered in West Tennessee!

Nature Extravaganza at Mineral Slough Boardwalk and Trail, Ghost River State Natural Area
Location: We will meet at 2 p.m. in the parking lot for the Post Office in downtown LaGrange (turn south off of route 57 onto Yager Drive in LaGrange- Post Office on right). After we are all together we will head down to the Ghost River State Natural Area, Mineral Slough Trail.

Description: We will walk along the approximately ½ mile long Mineral Slough boardwalk and trail which goes through bottomland forest and cypress-gum swamp. Since this is a short walk we will allow a lot of time for learning about the biology and ecology of the area. A portion of the trail may be muddy so boots are recommended. I plan to spend two hours at the site, but participants can leave before that time.
