Kord Diagnostic Laboratory

Kord Laboratory DiagnosticianC. E. Kord Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory provides no-cost food animal, fiber animal and equine animal testing and markedly reduced-cost companion animal testing for pet owners of Tennessee. By providing diagnostic services to food and fiber animal producers we serve the needs of the livestock industry and promote animal health within the state of Tennessee. Thus one of our primary goals is to quickly provide a diagnosis in cases of herd health problems so that practicing veterinarians can provide effective treatment and management advice to area producers and prevent further herd losses.

Another goal, accomplished by providing reduced-cost services for companion animals, not only serves the needs of Tennessee pet owners and companion animal veterinarians, but also allows monitoring of animals in close contact with people for possible emerging, zoonotic (diseases passed from animals to people) and anthroponotic (diseases passed from people to animals) infectious diseases and/or environmental toxins. This function is in support of the increasingly important worldwide collaboration among public and animal health officials known as the One Health initiative.

KAHDL services in support of animal disease diagnosis and regulatory activities within the state of Tennessee include post-mortem diagnostics conducted on deceased animals submitted to the laboratory for examination (we do not accept live animals), as well as diagnostic testing on specimens from live animals, such as surgical biopsies and tissue cultures that are submitted to the laboratory to help referring veterinarians diagnose live animal disease processes and/or meet regulatory requirements.
